OpenAI has launched an opt-in feature called Computer History, which literally watches everything you do on your computer, as you do it. It logs your clicks and keystrokes on your desktop and feeds that activity to ChatGPT as persistent context. The Verge reported the feature is designed to give the model a richer, continuous understanding of your workflow, rather than requiring you to re-explain your situation during each and every session. While that is genuinely useful, as ChatGPT therefore becomes a kind of apprentice, tailing your every move. It’s also a potential security nightmare. It’s the moment your AI assistant starts being more of a presence in the room. Before opting in, it is worth being precise about what you're trading: not just convenience, but the everyday personal artifacts of how you actually behave and click, and hesitate across an entire workday.

In an interview with All In’s Gavin Baker, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei described the current AI backlash as "fundamentally a crisis of trust," not a crisis of capability or comprehension. That’s clear. Capability arguments about AI have been winning the technical debate for years, but skepticism is still growing. Amodei is pointing at something more structural: trust is not built by demos. I agree with him that trust is built by consistent, verifiable, accountable behavior over time, from institutions and tools that have earned it. For anyone deciding how much cognitive authority to hand to an AI system, this is the most useful diagnostic than any benchmark score. But Amodei still doesn’t have a strong response to the assertion (a valid one in my opinion), that his company, Anthropic has fueled much of the fear-mongering and suspicion through their doomsday scenarios.
how it feels when a robot friend goes kaput.
A harbinger of our robotic future came this week, via the shutdown of Moxie, a social robot designed for children. MIT Technology Review published a detailed account of what happened to the kids who had bonded with Moxie over as long as six years when the system was shut down. Moxie's parent company, Embodied Inc., went bankrupt, and the robots became inert. The reporting captures what researchers call "grief responses" in children who had formed genuine emotional attachments to the device. This is indeed an early-warning illustration of what happens when we form emotional relationships with systems that can be discontinued, acquired, or deprecated. The architecture of attachment has always been a human design problem. But with AI, in some ways, it becomes a product liability question, as well.
prompt injections have entered the courtroom.
Ars Technica reported that a litigant, suspecting an AI system was being used to process court filings, embedded hidden prompt-injection text inside his official legal documents in an attempt to influence the AI's output in his favor. The attempt did not work, and the presiding judge was not amused. But the episode illustrates something important about where we actually are: ordinary people are already developing adversarial intuitions about AI systems embedded in the institutions that have power over us. Prompt injection as a legal strategy is equal parts absurd and clarifying. When litigants start hiding machine-readable instructions in court filings, the AI governance conversation becomes more urgent.

Anthropic announced that Claude will adopt Google DeepMind's SynthID-Text watermarking system, embedding invisible statistical signatures into AI-generated text that can be detected algorithmically, without being visible to human readers. The Verge covered the technical details, noting that SynthID-Text works by subtly biasing token selection during generation, leaving a detectable pattern that survives normal editing. This is the first serious infrastructure commitment to the idea that AI-generated prose should carry a verifiable provenance marker. This is the beginning of a new accountability layer. One thing to note: if you are accustomed to actively editing and re-working your text, the AI watermarks are brough to a minimum. In short: this move is aimed more at people who are just creating AI slop, with no human intervention. As long as you are an active participant in your own work, the new watermarking should not be a problem.
Chinese models are moving the needle as they gain competitiveness.
Ars Technica reported that OpenAI and Anthropic are engaged in active price competition on frontier model API access, driven significantly by pressure from Chinese competitors DeepSeek and Moonshot AI, which have been offering comparable performance at substantially lower costs. Consequently, powerful AI inference is becoming dramatically cheaper and more accessible to developers, startups, and researchers who previously couldn't afford large amounts of compute. In essence, this democratization is meaningful and it’s moving the market away from America, toward China. This is the essence of soft power. Furthermore, this creates strategic pressure to ship faster and spend less on the parts of development that don't produce revenue, like the teams whose job is to ask what could go wrong.
OpenAI dissolves the team that evaluates risk.
On August 16th, The Verge reported that OpenAI has disbanded its Preparedness team, the internal group responsible for evaluating catastrophic and frontier risks before models and systems are deployed. The dissolution comes as the company is shipping increasingly autonomous agentic products, including the one that escaped its sandbox in July. The Preparedness team's mandate was formally to stress-test systems against worst-case scenarios before those scenarios became news cycles. Instead of having the Preparedness team as a standalone “department”, OpenAI is deploying the role into specific teams, like bio and cyber.
